SOUTH CENTRAL REGIONAL C.A.R. MEETING HELD IN ARKANSAS

The South Central Region of the Children of the American Revolution (C.A.R.) met June 18-19, 2010 at the DoubleTree Hotel in Little Rock with the Arkansas Society C.A.R. serving as host. This region includes societies in Louisiana, Texas, Oklahoma, Mississippi, and Arkansas.

Thomas Johnson of Louisiana, the National Vice President of the South Central Region, presided during the meeting. The personal page for Jackie Johnson, the Senior National Vice President of the South Central Region, was Bethany Crum who is a member of the Tulip Ridge Society of Fordyce.

Benjamin A. Hickley of Texas is the National President of the N.S.C.A.R. and his National Theme is “Magnificent Valor – The Beginnings of Freedom.” His project for the year is the repair and restoration of the Great Essential Exhibit in Independence Hall in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This exhibit houses the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, and the Constitution of the United States of America. Ann Schaeffer of Virginia is the Senior National President.

Others in attendance included the national officers and chairmen from all over the United States. They presented skits showing activities in which the societies can participate in order to compete in the contests available and for the National Merit Award.

Jess Crum, a member of the Tulip Ridge Society of Fordyce, was a member of the Color Guard and carried the Arkansas Flag.

During the Opening Session on Friday night, Courtney Bailey of Marion, State President of the Arkansas Society, welcomed the group to Arkansas. Mary Lee Schultz, Regent of the Arkansas State DAR Society brought greetings from the Daughters of the American Revolution. Glenn Railsback, past president of the State SAR, brought greetings from the Sons of the American Revolution. Dr. Cindy Crum was installed as Senior President of the Arkansas C.A.R. Society.

At the banquet on Saturday night, Arkansas C.A.R. President Courtney Bailey gave a report on the state theme and project for this year. Her theme is “The Beginnings of our Freedom – the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution of the United States of America, and the Articles of Confederation.” Her projects include making people aware of what these great documents say, contributing to local museums, encouraging membership, organizing new societies, and saving pull tabs for the Ronald McDonald Houses.

During the awards presentation, Courtney received a Voyager Fund Pin from the Arkansas Society for her services to C.A.R. The Voyager Fund helps to make it possible for these national officers and chairmen to attend the regional meetings all over the United States since they travel most of the summer.

Other Arkansas C.A.R. members in attendance were Caitlyn Bailey, Zoe Schultz, Susan Milton, Aubrey Gill, and Josh Gill. Other senior leaders present were Sue Thompson, Susan Railsback, Gina S. Bailey, Betty B. Stafford, and Melrose Bagwell.

The big responsibility for Arkansas during this regional meeting was to keep the hospitality room open with lots of food and drinks for these young people. The Arkansas State Society Daughters of the American Revolution was most generous in supplying money for food as well as homemade cookies.

The Tulip Ridge C.A.R. Society in Arkansas has entered an educational booth for C.A.R. in the Dallas County Fair every year but one since 2002. Each year they win an award. For 2010 they followed the "Saving Lighthouses--One at a Time" theme and won a first place blue ribbon and a monetary award which they used for puchasing flags for school children.
