Chapter History

On May 24, 1912, State Regent Mrs. James William Noel
completed the organization of the Martha Baker Thurman
Chapter of Fort Smith. It was the eleventh Arkansas chapter,
and was named in honor of the grandaughter of John Baker,
a Revolutionary ancestor of the Organizing Regent, Helen
McCarthy Handlin. On December 7. 1960, members voted to change
the chapter name to the Fort Smith Chapter.
